Energy metabolism

Vitamin B12 is involved in the formation and maturation of red blood cells. Red blood cells have a lifespan of 120 days and are closely linked to energy, as they carry oxygen around the body. Without sufficient vitamin B12, the body cannot make new, healthy red blood cells, so less oxygen is delivered to the cells. This is where symptoms such as fatigue, paleness and weakness appear.

One of vitamin B12's roles is to reduce homocysteine levels, a sulfur-containing amino acid whose high levels are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is an essential water-soluble vitamin. Its chemical structure consists of a tetraamino cobalt corrin core with several side groups (CH3, OH etc.). It exists in several forms, including cyanocobalamin, the most common synthetic form used in medicines. Other forms available for supplementation and treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency are hydroxocobalamin, methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin.
